Wild Trout Blog

The Boise River Fishery began in March of 2007 as a means of gathering support for regulation changes on the lower Boise River. My objective was, and still is, to protect the river’s wild trout population and to create a quality destination for anglers. Since its inception, the site has expanded into a “Wild Trout Blog”. Photographs, information, and thoughts on fly fishing for trout and steelhead are now posted for the benefit of others who, like myself, are passionate about the sport.

Are We There Yet?

Certain days on the calendar provoke fishing trips for many. For some, that day is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Others fish on New Year’s Day in a manner of tradition. The summer solstice beckons me to the water - it falls on June 21 this year.  It is the longest day of the year where we live, with 16 hours of generous daylight. That’s three times as many fishing hours in one day compared to winter!

The solstice also means the beginning of summer….

Reggae music.

Lime juice on grilled chicken and in stirred drinks.

Charcoal-cooked red meat.

Wet wading.

Homework-free kids and a sleepy dog.

And carp on the fly, at least until these swollen rivers subside to dry fly levels.

I'm sure carp are fun to catch on a fly, but I can't see myself fishing for one UGLY fish. Also,I found out a friend likes eating them too. I can't imagine.

Au contraire, Joe...carp, like so many other disrespected fish, are beautiful in many ways. Observe them and fish for them and you might come around.
